A splitscreen save so you dony end up wrecking player 2s character or progressing the story/quests without that other person their to experience it. thats how you get to keep your character. Much like its clear inspiration, Dungeons and Dragons, Divinity Original Sin 2 is a tremendously fun cooperative experience, but it does require finding the right partner or group to play with. Start the game with friends and progress through the entire game togheter. But, everything is bound to a single save file. I mean, you could start the game in an offline/single player only fashion too if you never want people to join. You just have people taking over your normally computer controlled or manually controlled companions. Seriously? So you don't have your own independent character that you pick up and level up? so how are you supposed to play it? If the host decides to play without you, he'll gain control of your character (and other party members) and can gear and level the character up. The host of the game is the owner of the save file, and thus if you're playing and a friend is the host, you can create a character together (assuming you join before the campaign has started), but you cannot gear or level up that character on your own.
